Introduction: Ethnic wear is the epitome of Indian heritage. Since the old times, our ancestors have worn them to represent our culture and heritage. Each piece of our Indian ethnic wear tells us a story about the talent, craftsmanship, and artistry that exists in our country. The importance of these garments transcends mere style; they are the definition of sophistication and grace. These garments bind a person with their cultural roots making them more absorbed in their heritage. The aura, a person spreads after wearing Indian traditional wear transcends the limit of language. These garments are often associated with some important occasions such as weddings, cultural gatherings, parties, and rituals, making them an intrinsic part of our cultural celebrations.
However, while wearing such beautiful garments you must keep in mind certain things that can undermine the outfit and the unique aura that could have set it apart as extraordinary.
Here are 5 common mistakes, you must avoid to get a look that captivates the attention of everyone present;
1. Disregarding fit and tailoring:
While wearing ethnic wear for any occasion you must keep in mind your size and body shape as ignoring them can literally make you a ‘Fashion Terrorist’! Everybody has different body shapes and the outfit must align with them to make them look perfect. So, before any occasion, you must buy a dress that goes perfectly with your body shape and if you are tailoring a dress, you must get it stitched in a way that complements your body shape and enhances your features.
"When you wear an outfit, it should appear as if it was tailor-made just for you."
2. Mismatched jewellery and sandals:
A big nooo to your outfit will be mismatched jewelry and sandals. One must wear pieces of jewelry that align with the outfit they are wearing. Ethnic outfits lack completeness without the right jewelry. The following are some errors folks make while selecting jewelry:
· One must not wear small jhumkas with heavy ethnic wear like lehengas or designer sarees as they can hide your facial features and make your body more vibrant than your face. Hence, opt for embellished earrings.
One should avoid wearing a different neckpiece when sporting large earrings. As those large earrings will be the highlight of the show, that neckpiece may likely diminish their appeal.
· One must avoid wearing too many pieces as by doing it they will just be overdoing it instead of enhancing their look. One must balance everything they wear.
· One should steer clear of wearing jewellery that is more vibrant than their complexion as it might overshadow their natural beauty.
· Unlike Shweta Nanda at Anant Ambani’s wedding, yes you guessed it right!!! One must avoid wearing huge neckpieces which mostly cover the saree’s drape to the shoulders as they overdo the look.
You should choose sandals that match the color of your outfit; if that's not possible, they should at least complement the overall hue of what you’ll be wearing. You must choose sandals which are comfortable for you as uncomfortable sandals can make the event less enjoyable which you are going to regret later on. Also, one must avoid wearing highly flashy sandals with light colors as they can clash with the uniqueness of the outfit.
Hence, one should strive for balance in every aspect of their outfit.
3. Mismatch of colors and fabrics:
One must avoid pairing contrasting or vibrant colors. Both the colors paired must complement each other so that you can get the exact look you are aiming for. For example, you must avoid wearing vibrant pants and leggings with light-colored kurtis as it can totally ruin the look, hence always go for light-colored leggings if you opt for light-colored kurtis. Also, pairing contrasting colors might make you look exaggerated, so there must be color harmony between the colors you will be opting for. Similarly, while combining fabrics also, go for fabrics that align with the occasion you will be attending. For example, for day events you can opt for lighter fabrics like chiffon, organza, cotton, etc, and for evening wear you can opt for heavier fabrics such as velvet, silk, georgette, shinon, etc.
This is a Faux Georgette Gown, and can be worn during evening occasions. Faux georgette, with its luxurious weight, adds a touch of regal elegance to your look, making you the ‘Queen of the event’.
This is a Soft Organza Saree, perfect for day events. Its lightweight texture will probably give you a comfortable look. Hence, a perfect example of ‘elegance with comfort’.
4. Disregarding the occasion:
The primary aim of ethnic wear is to highlight your unique essence in the occasion you will be attending. So, for that, you must opt for wear that aligns with the occasion. For example, you can’t wear light outfits for a wedding and heavy outfits for any casual event. Formal events like weddings, demand you to wear embellished outfits consisting of heavy materials and casual gatherings demand you to wear light, simple, and elegant ethnic outfits without overdoing them. Hence, if you are unsure about the outfit, kindly research beforehand so that you can flaunt your outfit like nobody else.
5. Over Accessorizing:
Avoid over-accessorizing yourself as it won’t do any good and you will just be overdoing it. If you are opting for big embellished jhumkas, avoid wearing heavy neckpieces. Always try to go for a sober and simple look, opt for fewer but royal pieces of jewelry, and Boom!!! You are just going to rock the stage!!!!
Conclusion: Hence, ethnic wear forms the backbone of our fashion industry. We Indians are famous for our culture and traditions including our traditional Indian ethnic wear. It symbolizes identity and a sense of belonging. So, we must carry it in a way that draws out the best version of ourselves, but in a new and unique way.
